2014 Abednego Shiraz Mourvedre Grenache

The Fruit:

The Abednego completes the Icon trio of super-premium reds from Grant Burge Wines, sitting alongside the highly awarded Meshach Shiraz and Shadrach Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit for this wine is sourced from vines with over 100 years of age. The old vines deliver fruit with incredible concentration and depth giving the resultant wine the ability to develop over many years. Due to the dry growing season in 2014, crop levels were very low. However, they produced extremely high quality red wines with great colour and magnificent structure. The hand-picked fruit is a blend of 38% Shiraz, 35% Mourvedre, and 27% Grenache.

The Winemaking:

After crushing, the juice was fermented on skins for 7 to 8 days depending on the variety and unique qualities of each batch. Once fermentation was complete, selected parcels were either pressed into stainless steel for settling, or left in their original fermenters for extended maceration for 3- 4 weeks on skins. The wines were regularly tasted to determine when to finish maceration, and once the desired tannin and flavour structure was achieved it was then gently pressed and transferred to oak. A combination of seasoned larger format Foudre vats (2500 ltr) along with French oak Puncheons (500 ltr) are used for this wine with a total of 16 months maturation prior to bottling. The larger oak format retains freshness of fruit yet has all the benefits of ageing in oak with a softening of the tannins and maturation of the aromas and flavours.

The 2014 Abednego is a richly flavoured and elegantly structured wine with aromas of plums, liquorice are complemented by hints of spice. A beautifully balanced palate, with powerful fruit & fine tannins providing very good texture and excellent length. The dense, mouth-filling mid palate and long, textural finish combine to create a wine that is rich and elegant, that will sit beautifully on any table now, or cellar gracefully for up to 15 years.

      More of an emphasis on shiraz here than with the Holy Trinity - another GSM. 44% Shiraz, 30% Grenache and 26% Mataro. The three varieties were all fermented together. Not common but that was how things worked out this year. This is young and it does seem to offer a slightly oaky note, though no new oak is apparently involved. There is a sandalwood note, a hint of nutmeg. It is bright and supple with black fruits. Very fine tannins, lingers beautifully. Serious potential here. Really like this. This is a more powerful richer, firmer wine with evident structure, than the 09 THT.

      Made in good years, production is in the 350-500 case territory. Fruit comes off vines 100+ years and all at a maximum yield of 1-2 t/acre. Fairly delicate aromatic approach, good perfume of rose, and florals. A little spice up front on the palate, very fine - silken almost- - with chalky tannins approaching the mid/back palate. Backed up with good fruit character, generous length.

      Medium to deep garnet in color, the 2009 SGM Abednego is scented of warm raspberry tart and dried mulberry with some loam and earth undertones topped with a touch of spice. Tight-knit and crisp on the palate, it has low to medium levels of chewy tannins and a long finish with some white pepper coming through on the end.

      Savoury delights burst forth in this blend of 33 per cent Shiraz, 31 per cent Grenache and 25 per cent Mourvedre.
      It is brick red with a purple core and has briar aromas.
      Gamey plum flavour zips onto the front of the palate and elements of Turkish Delight, liquorice, dried cranberries and spearmint integrate with spicy oak on the middle palate. Dusty tannins feature at the finish. Drink with Duck a l'orange, braised venison shanks with garlic beans or Moroccan spiced lamb.

      composed proportionately of 44:31:25 Shiraz, grenach, mourvedre this is a limited release. And it's good to see Burge in recent years pulling back from the high alcohol weight of his wines, the generous flavours of this one marked by a quite delicious fresh juiciness, the refined, mid weight palate full of life and fruit purity before a balanced and long-lingering finish. Lovely drinking.

      This is only the second time that Grant Burge has appeared in my 100 and, interestingly, it was this exact cuvée that made the grade last time. Coming from 100 year old plus Shiraz and Mourvèdre vines, Abednego is a pantechnicon of a proposal. With a massive, dark, brooding nose and a sensationally impactful palate, admittedly you would not expect to drink this wine at only three years old preferring to allow it to mature, but there is so much daring and showmanship involved in the glass it is pointless trying to deny yourself the pleasure of diving in.

      Blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. All grown on 100 (plus) year old vines. The three varieties were co-fermented. Lighter and less oak-driven than many of the Grant Burge supers of the past. Seems fresher as a result. Tastes of fresh raspberries/strawberries and blackberry jam, sandalwood and earth. Minerally, creamy tannin. Fine and elegant. A refreshing style of red. Spicy aftertaste. Caught me by surprise, this one did. It's not in the style I was expecting, but it's a lovely drink.

      This is the joy of the Burge Barossa blend done to perfection. Shiraz 44%, Grenache 31% and Mourvedre 25%, are given a subtle massage resulting in a Rhone-inspired red. It's nicely medium bodied at around 13% and it has an attractive personality on the nose. There's a good combination of dark and red fruits, it has a nicely savoury, meaty edge too. Cooked meats, white pepper, and other spicy ephemera enliven the senses. Love the mouth feel and the slippery weight of the wine across the palate; it's not blockbuster, but beautifully handled with raspberry, black cherry and spice all playing their part, nicely raspy tannins and clean, up front acids make it a mouth-watering food style. It finishes long and made me go back for another glass. Lovely work.

      This has developed into a lovely rich wine. Drinking beautifully right now with some years ahead of it. Sourced from three vineyards that are all at least 100 years old. The fruit is left on skins for a month, clearly contributing to the excellent tannin, colour and flavour. The oak is all French but none is new so the fruit expression is not compromised. A terrific Rhone-style wine.

      Abednego completes the icon trio and sits beside the highly acclaimed flagship wines Meshach and Shadrach. The wine, which accompanied the dinner's sixth course of braised ox cheek, creamed polenta, pencil leeks and a grenache glaze, is 100% Barossa-made, sourced from premium vineyards with an average age of 110 years old. The old vines produce incredible concentration and depth to allow the wine to develop for many years. This is very much a Rhone-style wine with extended maceration on solids, and one to impress the French with. A well-balanced wine with fine grained tannins, this will keep for 15-20 years.
